The Lawyer's Daughter (Excerpt)
By Shayla Day

Nathan bolted out the front door as the man began shooting at him. Laura grabbed the pot of boiling water from the stove and threw it at the man. He screamed in agony, and Adrienne escaped from his grasp. She made a dash toward the glass patio doors, and gunshots whizzed by her head and shattered the glass. Adrienne ran through the patio doors and sprinted through the backyard. The heavy footsteps of the man began to get closer. She used every ounce of energy she had to propel her body down the streets of Chicago.

“She’s headed toward the bridge,” Adrienne heard the man say.

She ran across the bridge over the Chicago River trying to flag down cars for help. She prayed a police car emerged since the police station wasn’t far away. Suddenly, a black Lexus stopped in the middle of the bridge and blocked traffic. Two people jumped out and ran to Adrienne. She stopped running and turned around to go the other way, but the masked man was coming. She gripped the side of the railing and tried to figure out what to do. The two people from the Lexus drew their guns and pointed them at her. The masked man reloaded his gun and aimed it at her chest. Adrienne began to hyperventilate. She was trapped.

“It’s over, kid,” the masked man said.

Adrienne glanced over the railing at the river below. She looked at the three guns pointed at her. She took a deep breath and jumped over the side of the bridge. She felt as though she was flying as she made her descent. Her body crashed violently into the river and everything went black.
